Barry Smith commenced employment in his father's Holden dealership in Geelong
Victoria in March 1970. His father Roy, had been the General Manager of Holden
NSW country dealerships since 1947.
In 1983 Barry, his wife Kathi, son Jason and daughter Nickola moved from Geelong
to Sydney and commenced Barry Smith Holden in the suburb of Dee Why. New
enthusiasm generated into the existing staff proved successful and provided
opportunities to improve the Dealership.
The dealership was one of three Sydney dealerships to win the "Finest 50" award
(Holden's National Competition) for 1983, repeating the performance in 1985,
1986, and 1987. Throughout the 5 years that Barry Smith operated in Dee Why, the
dealership gained strength in all areas, especially Holden's market share on the
Peninsula.
Barry Smith was elected by his fellow Sydney dealers as the chairman of the
Sydney Holden dealer committee in 1987 and occupied his position until February,
1989.
In July 1989, having sold the Dee Why Dealership, Barry Smith purchased the
Holden and Isuzu dealership in Pennant Hills.
The time since has been prosperous for Barry Smith. In 1989 Barry was
Australia's No.1 achiever in Holden's Grand Masters Program (Holden's best 30
dealers) and again a Grant Master dealership in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993.
Barry Smith acquired the Hyundai Franchise in January 1993.
In 1995 Martec (a well respected motoring body) awarded Barry Smith "The Martec
National Dealer Of The Year Award".
